About the Author

Robert Benedetti, a distinguished teacher of acting and directing, and three-time Emmy and Peabody Award-winning film producer,�received his PhD from Northwestern University. After serving as Director of Theatre and Artistic Director of the Court Theatre at the University of Chicago, he became an early member of Chicago’s Second City Theatre.

He taught for fifty years at schools such as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Carnegie-Mellon University, The National Theatre School of Canada, the Australian Victorian College of the Arts, and the University of California, Riverside.

�

He was Chairman of Theatre at York University in Toronto, Head of the Acting Program at the Yale Drama School, and for eight years Dean of Theatre at The California Institute of the Arts. He recently retired as a tenured Full Professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Artistic Director of the Nevada Conservatory Theatre.

Benedetti was Company Director of the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and has directed at many other regional theatres, including the Tyrone Guthrie Theatre, the South Coast and San Diego Repertory Theatres, and Australia’s Melbourne Theatre Company, with multiple productions at the Oregon, Colorado, and Great Lakes Shakespeare festivals.�

As a screenwriter and producer, Benedetti has won three Emmys and a Peabody Award. He has written six books on acting and film production, including The Actor at Work 10th edition, The Actor in You, 5th edition (now translated into Danish,) ACTION! Acting for Film and Television and From Concept to Screen (now translated into Chinese.)

In 2005 he received the Lifetime Career Achievement Award from the American Association for Theatre in Higher Education, and in April, 2012, he was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Theatre at the Kennedy Center.

This is an introductory acting book that leads the actor into the world of play. This is one of the first steps of the Stanislavski method, as well as many others. I would recommend to as an introductory book

A concise yet thorough look at the Stanislavsky Method

Robert Benedetti is one of the most respected teachers of the art of acting in America today. In The Actor in You, Benedetti lays out 16 lessons describing the theory in understandable terms, exercises the reader can do to enhance his or her acting skills, and, especially the second edition, several useful skits and portions of plays to illustate the principles. I have used this book as a text while teaching Acting at the college level and highly recommend it.

More of an encyclopedia than a dictionary

As the name implies, this is a dictionary - but "topical encyclopedia" might be a better description, as the book provides tremendous detail and information on all aspects of Ancient Egypt, from geographic locations ("where is the Valley of the Kings") to more specific topics. Under the heading, "magic bricks" for example, the definition of these bricks is not only provided (they were special bricks placed at the four cardinal points of the compass in New Kingdom tombs), but details of what was in the bricks (amulets to protect the deceased from evil depending on the cardinal direction the brick was placed), and what was inscribed on them.

There are diagrams of tombs and temples, details and myths around the dieties, brief biographies of pharaohs, and all manner of minutae that even seasoned Egyptologists would find interesting. For anyone interested in Ancient Egypt, this is an outstanding resource.

One of the Best Places to Start!

Ten years ago this book was given to me in hardcover. With a life long interest in Egypt and Egyptologists in the family, inevitably I have read a great many books on Ancient Egypt itself. Of all of the books that I own, this is probably one of my most uses because it does truly live up to its name. It is a fabulous overview of the culture, history and life of the Ancient Egptians anywhere. You can look up just about any term, place name, deity, Pharaoh, etc and you are given a great deal of good information that informs but does not overwhelm. Dr. Shaw and Dr. Nicholson have done an outstanding job of making Ancient Egypt very accessible in this little book. I highly recommend it for anyone of any age who might be interested in the subject.

I bought this book at the British Museum a few weeks ago and it has not left my side since. It's perhaps the most informative book on Ancient Egypt I've ever come across. Perfect for hobbiests to enthusiasts to anyone who wants a comprehensive resource. The book is amazingly complex in detail and filled with amazing pictures.

Fantabulous Exposure to the Topics

I teach math for liberal arts at a community college and I just wasn't happy with the text book being used. The challenging thing about a math for liberal arts course is that it doesn't really have a unifying theme its just a mathematical smorgasbord board of all the topics that they feel liberal arts students ought to know. And then very often the students aren't interested in math and/or have a poor history with the subject. So I was looking for materials to supplement my class and I must say this book is wonderful! The way that the author's cover set theory, logic, and geometry is simple enough that it can be understood without a high level understanding of mathematics but deep enough that the reader or student can still understand the beauty of the ideas. Many times when a book tries to expose the reader to a concept such as a set they cut out all the beauty and break it down to the essentials. The students learn sets this way but they also get very bored and in many cases will never understand the beauty of these simple concepts. If I could I would give this book and infinite number of stars. For any teacher or student this a a great book.

Should be required reading for agency folk

This book should be required reading for every agency account person. In fact, we made it just that at our agency. Every new account person now gets a copy and genuinely asked to read it. If everyone followed the advice in the book we'd all have a much easier time at work!

A must have for anyone in advertising!

Of all the book on advertising I've read, this is by far my top pick. It's an easy read and extremely insightful. I started my career as an advertising recruiter and this book helped inspire me to make my move into an agency. The chapters are very well laid out, interspersed with humorous anecdotes and personal examples.

I would recommend this book to anyone remotely connected to the advertising industry and even those who are not, as its advice transcends the advertising world. For the aspiring advertising professional it will provide a comprehensive introduction to the business side of advertising and I believe even the most seasoned advertising executive would find this a delight to read.

I know I will continue to reference this book throughout the rest of my career. Don't forget to check out the reading list which includes both classics of advertising literature as well as the latest influential books!
