narrator sounded too much like a man's voice

I think calling this one a lesbian romance is a tad misleading. At least to a lesbian. By that let me clarify a quick difference between lesfic and f/f stories. There is lesfic romance where the sexuality and lifestyle of lesbians is clearly present... mostly written by actual lesbians. Then there is f/f where the straight men, straight women, and bisexuals usually dominate as authors... along with a smattering of other gender fluid phenomena (e.g., the non-monogamous lesbian-identified bisexual snuffaluffagus or THE highly evolved and amazing 'I don't believe in labels!!!', etc etc)... these (typically) sex-centered folk usually cater to men and fantasies straight people have of what lesbians are like. The erotic variety, mostly. Leads are pretty much always two femmes. It's a bigger market. I get it... it sells.
Now, I love my lezzie lesfic fam... but I like my femmy femmes and occasionally enjoy them very much (and more realistically) in the f/f arena. When I read f/f, I'm open to who wrote them. Other times... they are just too damn straight or man-centered for this dyke to register as interesting, plausible, or sexy.
This is a f/f story. And I couldn't help registering the lead, first person narrator as a dude. It may or may not be written by a woman, but that was the voice of a man. You could change her female pronouns to "he" and very little would change. And it isn't even erotica (this doesn't automatically make it a romance). There is actually only one sex scene in this short story. It's supposed to be a budding attraction between a high profile corporate suit (Lucy) and a free spirit bike messenger ("Rabbit")... but everything about it stunk heterosexual. From the smallest character nuances and observations... to some cringe-worthy dialogue. It would be easy for a man to put himself in this narrator's place. There's also the aging suit pursuing someone half her age thing.
I almost didn't read it because of the cover, lol... so awful. I'm not even sure who that's supposed to be. Now that could *represent* the narrator even though she is self-described as a "ball-busting bitch on heels." No butch descriptors except in attitude... and her attitude is way manly. Like, hetero manly. And the more womanly lead is the one who smokes cigars, lol. Now don't get me wrong, I love my butches... but this just felt too much like a straight man (a lesbian would know the difference). Or. A straight woman's idea of a corporate power lesbian... which would be- a man?? Weirdly enough, this corporate lead opens as a straight woman (despite never breathing a word about any man)... she knows a million lez colleagues and acquaintances and is totally straight, lol. Suddenly a sassy bike messenger brings out the gay, lol. And she's so confused she has to google hot femme lesbian images while at work because she doesn't know what they are... despite knowing so many. There are so many crossed lines here I don't know where to begin.
F-- it. Here are a few (of many) random quotes for the lezzies who get it to enjoy:
Lucy: "Any luck with the filly behind the bar?"
Lucy: "I dared a glance to my side and saw her lightly running the pad of one fingertip through the foamy head. She looked at it [her beer bottle] almost lovingly, like she was teasing some lucky woman." (or man)
"You ever had a blow job, Lucy?" ( ? )
"Ever so gently, she kissed my landing strip...."

Wish it was a novel

I really enjoyed this. I rated it a 4 because, I feel she could have developed the plot and characters into a novel. I'll definitely keep an eye out for more of her work.

It is a sweet yet short story about a business woman missing herself when she meets an intriguing messenger that sets her on the journey to find herself. I enjoyed it.
