A good survey of the artist's life and works

In _Michelangelo_, Hibbard presents a unbiased account of Michelangelo's life in an enjoyable mix of historical narravitve and critical and contextual analysis. The writing is approachable with a minimum of high-brow art jargon. Hibbard also refrains from diving too deep into speculation about fine points such as sexuality and politics. This book is suited for those desiring an end-to-end introduction to the man and his art, or for those who have forgotten 90% of art survey 101, like me.

THE Basic Guide to Michelangelo and His Art

If you were to read only one text dealing with the great Michelangelo and his art, this would be the book. It is a succinct biography in which one also finds clear and well chosen discussions of the artistic works of the great Florentine. It would be fair to say that Professor Hibbard is a graceful guide to these works--he shows us the key elements of the sculpture, painting and architecture that made Michelangelo the preeminent figure of the Renaissance. And he presents them to us as the artist's life unfolds, so that we can understand the challenges met and problems solved at various stages in Michelangelo's development.

The book is filled with a large number of black and white photographs as well as plans and drawings which, together, help the reader understand each of the works being discussed. Indeed, the reader would be hard pressed to find more than a handful of opposing pages that do not have one or more illustrations. For those who are so inclined and long to see more of each work, they are titled so clearly that a quick search on line can bring plenty more to look at. But the illustrations provided in the book are more than sufficient for the reader's understanding.

If you are looking for a shocking expose of Michelangelo the man, with all of his secrets revealed (warts and all!), then you do not want to read this book. Professor Hibbard discusses Michelangelo's personality and personal life in detail, but always in the context of his creations. He writes with a deft and gentlemanly reserve that allows the reader to accept the facts without drawing unreasonable conclusions.

The conversations about the well-known works - the Pieta, the David, the Sistine Chapel ceiling and Last Judgment - are all clear and helpful. The on and off again relationships with various Medici and Popes provides a helpful understanding of how and why some of the artist's projects were unfinished, or completed in terms altogether different from their conception.

The discussions of the architectural contributions of Michelangelo are very good, and provide the reader with an appreciation of the sculptural qualities of these larger than life sculptures. Indeed, Hibbard's discussion of the Bibliotheca Laurenziana stairway and St Peter's are the best sort of architectural criticism to be found anywhere.

At the end of the book, but separate from the extensive bibliography, is a section called "Notes for Further Reading", which, if followed, could benefit the reader who wants to know more.

Leo Beranek, an Iowa farm boy who became a Renaissance man--scientist, inventor, entrepreneur, musician, television executive, philanthropist, and author--has lived life in constant motion. His seventy-year career, through the most tumultuous and transformative years of the last century, has always been propelled by the sheer exhilaration of trying something new. In Riding The Waves, Leo Beranek tells his story. Beranek's life changed direction on a summer day in 1935 when he stopped to help a motorist with a flat tire. The driver just happened to be a former Harvard professor of engineering, who guided the young Beranek toward a full scholarship at Harvard's graduate school of engineering. Beranek went on to be one of the world's leading experts on acoustics. He became Director of Harvard's Electro-Acoustic Laboratory, where he invented the Hush-A-Phone--a telephone accessory that began the chain of regulatory challenges and lawsuits that led ultimately to the breakup of the Bell Telephone monopoly in the 1980s. Beranek moved to MIT to be a professor and Technical Director of its Acoustics Laboratory, then left academia to found the acoustical consulting firm Bolt, Beranek and Newman. Known for his work in noise control and concert acoustics, Beranek devised the world's largest muffler to quiet jet noise and served as acoustical consultant for concert halls around the world (including the Tanglewood Music Shed, the storied summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra). As president of BBN, he assembled the software group that invented both the ARPANET, the forerunner of the Internet, and e-mail. In the 1970s, Beranek risked his life savings to secure the license to operate a television station; he turned Channel 5 in Boston into one of the country's best, then sold it to Metromedia in 1982 for the highest price ever paid up to that time for a broadcast station. "One central lesson I've learned is the value of risk-taking and of moving on when risks turn into busts or odds look better elsewhere," Beranek writes. Riding The Waves is a testament to the boldness, diligence, and intelligence behind Beranek's lifetime of extraordinary achievement. Leo Beranek is a pioneer in acoustical research, known for his work in noise control and the acoustics of concert halls, and the author of twelve books on these topics. A great story spoiled

Leo Beranek had a very interesting life and a fascinating story. It seems this work has been well-reviewed on the basis of his ground-breaking accomplishments. However his self-absorption is overwhelmingly evident. Regrettably, his all-about-me delivery is ultimately tedious, repetitive, and disappointing. My copy will be donated.

Inspiring book by a Genius

For anyone who is seriously into acoustics must seriously read this autobiography of one of the greatest acousticians. He will be 100 years old this month!!!

What an inspiring book especially for the starting acoustician who is grappling for projects. Mr Beranek shows his struggle throughout the years and points out that it aint going to be rosy all the time....hence riding with the waves.

The life of an American scientist/engineer/businessman

This book describes much of Leo Beranek's life (he continutes to contribute in his mid 90s)from his own point of view. It is particularly suggested for young people on the brink of a life in science, engineering or business. Beranek has had a sufficiently rich life in any one of these domains to satisfy most people. But, his crafty mid-western take on all three domains makes his story very special. He and his various activities has contributed to the lives of a great number of people. Most of these people know not his name or even his disciplines.

Later, others will write histories of some of the events about which Leo Beranek has written. Their outlooks will be different. Doubtless some will find some of what he did not to their liking. However, one gets the idea that at each turn in his life Beranek did not only what would be best for society and for his family. This is the sort of story Americans could read more often.

A great book for flight professionals

This text offers an algegraic approach to basic aerodynamics, air craft performance, plus limited coverage of helicopters. The chapters are now managebable for use in a college level introductory aerodynamics course primarily geared toward flight students, in any of the new emerging college curriculum. The book's organization has improved significantly over the first edition. The text is easy to read with good practical examples but there is a level of sophistication above most of the other aerodynamics texts geared for pilots. Practicing aviation professionals will also gain from use of this text. In short, I would say that the book is ideal for college level aviation programs and practicing aviation professionals.

Give me a break...

They took a book from 1965, cut it down a bit, failed to proof read their slight edits and sold it to students at a premium. Don't waste the money on it. You can download Aerodynamics for Naval aviators off the FAA's site for free. This book is just a poor copy of it of Hurt's original work.

Excellent summary but expensive.

This book is an excellent summary of aircraft performance. However, it is not good at explaining concepts in detail and deriving formulas. Other books should be read first or with this book. A strong background in aerodynamics is assumed. This book is horribly overpriced for the limited content.

A top shelf class finally back in print

I'm surprised this book hasn't been reviewed yet. Collier's classic is THE guide to direct response copywriting. Right now as I write this, there's a used copy online fo $1,009.95 One friend who's paid five figures to write sales letters says he wouldn't let his copy go for $10,000 if he couldn't get another. It's pretty remarkable that this book is back in print at such a reasonable price. If you intend to make money from your advertising, this is a key book to read, study and master.

Amazing!! This is a true direct marketing classic

Robert Collier is one of the absolute greatest copywriters
of all time. This book is simply a tremendous bargain since
it hasn't been re-published in many years. I have 2 copies
of the original 5th edition on my bookshelf because I never
wanted to lose one. If you study Collier's work you can crank
out winning sales letters that bring in the cash anytime you
like.
I still personally use many of his sales letters ideas in
my own Internet business day in and day out.

The only book on copywriting you need - seriously.

After you've read scientific advertising and gotten the general idea of direct response, this is the only book you need on copywriting. Just understand that it's not really a step-by-step book, nor is it a page turner. It's more of a reference book.

You should, however, muscle through the entire book at some point if you're a serious copywriter or even if you hire copywriters on a regular basis. I have personally adopted a number of ideas from Mr. Collier's copy over the years and have seen great results from the copy.

I've also read a lot of other copywriting books and attended the seminars, yada yada, but I gotta tell ya - as far as value for money and stuff I actually use .... this is pretty much all I ever needed. To give you an idea, I've been marketing online and off for over 16 years and I've seen the great majority of the "greats" work. So this is high praise.

I recommend it to everyone in my entrepreneurs' inner circle group and really anyone that wants to understand how a good offer is constructed and how you get people to pull out their wallets and buy immediately.

Oh and one final thought. While the book is available in electronic formats, don't bother. It's too big and too much of a reference book to be manageable in electronic form. I'd pick up a paper copy even if you don't normally do paper books.

Do Not Buy This Kindle Edition

The formatting is atrocious.

Hard line breaks are set beyond the Kindle's margin - the whole book looks like the last message on a long chain email, where every sentence wraps jaggedly in the middle. Fortunately I ordered a preview before buying a different version.

Excellent textbook

I'm a final year medical student at Oxford currently preparing for finals in medicine and surgery. I recently bought this following a recommendation from a friend and I have found it very useful. I think the symptom-based approach, i.e. chapters based around a topic like 'shortness of breath', forces you to think diagnostically and so is especially useful for consolidation. Having said this, it would also have been of great benefit at the start of clinical school when I was looking for a framework with which to approach the common problems. The chapters succeed in logically taking you through from history to examination to investigation interpretation and management options while forcing critical analysis of the case at each stage.

All in all, a valuable addition to any student's library, complementing the many established reference texts. Well done!
