Luckily I have a wonderful wife who acts as a Tessa to my occasional Hugo." Chris Van Dusen lives in Maine with his family.

Funny!

Hugo was a very short king with a big ego. He made his people listen to him talk about how wonderful he was for hours. He made his people bow to him each time he walked past. A peasant girl, Tess, was walking down the road with a heavy load. Hugo was behind her and his servants ordered her to move off the road. Tess told the king to go around her. This infuriated the king and the servants bumped Tess into the gutter.

Tess, it turns out, is a witch, She was so angry with the king that she put a spell on him, making his head grow every time he thought about how wonderful he was. His head grew and grew and grew, until he floated off the castle walls and fell into the mud. Who should come along but Tess?!

She tweaked his ears and out of his head came all the haughty things Hugo had thought about himself for so many years until his head returned to normal size and he felt embarrassed at himself and apologized. Tess and Hugo, of course, fell in love and married.

Fabulously expressive illustrations. Rhyming text. And absolutely, side-splittingly hilarious.

"King Hugo's head deflated
like a giant pink balloon,
and when he heard what he had said,
he felt like a buffoon.

Sheepishly he said to her,
`I do apologize.'
Then he looked at Texxa
with his big, sad puppy eyes."

Chris Van Dusen has done it again

Chris Van Dusen is our five-year-old son's favorite author. The new book had him in fits of laughter, and he particularly loved the animals looking on as the king blundered along. The illustrations are, just as in The Circus Ship, gorgeous and full of interesting detail. The rhyming verse is very catchy and my son has already memorized it to read along. We highly recommend all Van Dusen's books!

King, Bowled Over, Learns Lesson

The book's title is a good indicator of the fun your children will have reading this story by Chris van Dusen. His illustrations are bright and attractive alongside a clever rhyming text. Van Dusen explains ego and then uses King Hugo as an example. Our 5 year old took to the story right away, enjoying King Hugo's swelling head and his resulting downfall. The illustrations van Dusen uses to accompany the story almost tell the tale itself, making it a good book for young picture-only readers as well as those who are just beginning to read and build their vocabulary. Look for the strange gentleman in the 50's-ish pork pie hat in the crowd!

About the Author
Gloria Anzaldúa was a Chicana-tejana-lesbian-feminist poet, theorist, and fiction writer from south Texas. She was the editor of the critical anthology MAKING FACE, MAKING SOUL/HACIENDO CARAS: CREATIVE AND CRITICAL PERSPECTIVES BY FEMINISTS OF COLOR (Aunt Lute Books, 1990), co-editor of This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color, and winner of the Before Columbus Foundation American Book Award. She taught creative writing, Chicano studies, and feminist studies at University of Texas, San Francisco State University, Vermont College of Norwich University, and University of California Santa Cruz. Anzaldúa passed away in 2004 and was honored around the world for shedding visionary light on the Chicana experience by receiving the National Association for Chicano Studies Scholar Award in 2005. Gloria was also posthumously awarded her doctoral degree in literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz. A number of scholarships and book awards, including the Anzaldúa Scholar Activist Award and the Gloria E. Anzaldúa Award for Independent Scholars, are awarded in her name every year.

This was a groundbreaking work in its day and continues to be one of the top anthologies for women of color. Brilliant editing and preface by Gloria Anzuldua. A must read for both men and women!

ANOTHER EXCELLENT COLLECTION OF WRITINGS BY A DIVERSE GROUP OF WOMEN

Gloria Anzaldúa (1942-2004) also wrote/edited This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color, This Bridge We Call Home: Radical Visions for Transformation, Borderlands/La Frontera, Interviews/Entrevistas, The Gloria Anzaldúa Reader, etc.

She wrote in the Introduction to this 1990 book, “In this anthology and in our daily lives, we women of color strip off the mascaras others have imposed on us… so that we may become subjects in our own discourses… This book aims to make accessible to others our struggle with all our identities, our linkage-making strategies and our healing of broken limbs… For years I waited for someone to compile a book that would continue where ‘This Bridge Called My Back’ left off… A book that would deepen the dialogue between all women and that would take on the various issues… in alliance-building. A book that would explode the neat boundaries of the half dozen categories of marginality that define us and one that would unflinchingly bring us [face to face] with our own historias. A book that would bear unmistakable witness…

“I got tired… of being a resource for teachers and students who asked me what texts by women of color they should read or teach and where they could get these writings… Then, in the spring of 1988, when I came… to teach for U.C. Santa Cruz’s Women’s Studies, I realized there were no recent anthologies of women-of-color writings. I stopped waiting… I worked around the clock frantically locating, reading, copying, compiling and organizing material for a class reader…” (Pg. xvi-xvii) She continues, “This anthology is meant to engage the reader’s total person… It attempts to explore our realities and identities… and to unbuild and rebuild them… these pieces attest to the fact that more and more we are concentrating on our own projects, our own agendas, our own theories.” (Pg. xviii)

Some of the writings included are Barbara Smith’s ‘Racism and Women’s Studies’; ‘Inclusion Without Influence: The Continuing Tokenism of Women of Color’ by Lynet Uttal; Bernice Zamora’s ‘Notes from a Chicano “Coed”’; June Jordan’s ‘Where is the Love?’; ‘Talking Back’ by bell hooks; Michelle Cliff’s ‘Object Into Subject: Some Thoughts On the Work of Black Women Artists’; ‘Developing Unity Among Women of Color’ by Virginia Harris and Trinity Ordoña; Audre Lorde’s ‘I Am Your Sister: Black Women Organizing Across Sexualities’; ‘La conciencia de la mestiza: Towards a New Consciousness’ by Gloria Anzaldúa, and much more.

To give you a brief idea of the riches contained in this collection, here are a few quotes: “the previous … women’s movement had attempted to create an empowered sisterhood through erasing our differences as women of color under the ‘unifying’ category of ‘women’ … in opposition to the category ‘men.’ The privileging of this binary opposition, however, made invisible important differences within each of these categories. Thus racism was unthinkingly perpetuated in the name of liberation. The ‘common ground’ …. was constructed so that it forced a false unity of women, a unity which worked to erase and thus oppress the lives of many women. To demand the recognition of differences from the inside of this unity signified disloyalty…” (Pg. 65) [Chela Sandoval]

“I see so many of us on the streets today… We’re part of a very unique, late 1960s biracial baby boom and now we’re coming out, coming into our own, finding our way through this relatively new thing called adulthood… Other Blacks nod and greet us with a ‘How you doin today’ or they don’t. Only to explain later in whispering, secretive tones, ‘I really wasn’t sure when I first saw you…’ And when we openly identify African American… we’re told to forget it. That we’re not REALLY Black, not authentic, down-home … sistas…” (Pg. 91) [Kristal Brent Zook]

“We [women of color] have memories like elephants. The slightest hurt is recorded deep within. We do not forget the injury done to us and we do not forget the injury we have done another. For unfortunately we do not have hides like elephants. Our vulnerability is measured by our capacity for openness, intimacy. “I was a junkie… This act is clearly the embodiment of self-hatred. Hatred which goes back a long time… Yet it is our collective wills which have created the need for killer drugs. Violent responses in any form they take are accomplices to the wills which have created the need. The availability of drugs is not the problem or the dealer down on 122nd street. They are only players in a far more complex value system of worth which nurtures self-hatred. “Recently, efforts by black women writers to call attention to our work serve to highlight both our presence and absence. Whenever I peruse women’s bookstores, I am struck not by the rapidly growing body of feminist writing by black women, but by the paucity of published material. Those of us who write and are published remain few in number. The context of silence is varied and multi-dimensional. Most obvious are the ways racism sexism, and class exploitation act suppress and silence. Less obvious are the inner struggles, the efforts made to gain the necessary confidence to write, to re-write, to fully develop craft and skill—and the extent to which such efforts fail.” (Pg. 210) [bell hooks]

Racism translates the differences among us into RELATIVELY preferential treatment for some at the expense of others, promoting internalized racism and cross-cultural hostility. Disunity among people of color due to the exploitation of differences is an inherent part of the system of racism. The POTENTIAL for unity is there and the POWER is tremendous---witness the recent Civil Rights Movement. I can comfortably say that this agile and masterful "rewrite" of Hugo ...

It would be inappropriate for me to judge how accurate and faithful this translation is to the original. There are very few English translations of the play available for me to make comparisons, and my knowledge about the German language still remains at counting from one to ten. However, as it may always be the case that a work translated is written twice, I can comfortably say that this agile and masterful "rewrite" of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Der Schwierige by Nicholas Stephens is a wonderful must-read if you are interested in plays, German literature, comedies, or simply a nice afternoon sipping coffee and bonding with your sofa. Stephens' fluent and Wodehouse-like choice of words gives every character a fitting voice so lively that one finds it difficult not to read out. It is a merit to the translator that this classical masterpiece created almost a century ago could still read so smooth, arresting and relevant, enticing laughter, tears, as well as some contemplations about what kindness, loyalty, faith, love, family and relationships are meant to be.

It is almost impossible to read this without having many favourite lines to quote. One of my favourites always is: "Lukas, switch it off! I don't like this indiscreet machine. Lukas!"

Stock problems? Look no further....

If you work in stock control, sales, purchasing, or production planning and really do not have a clue where to start in order to maximise the profitability of your inventory (both raw materials and finished goods), then there is no better place to start than with this book. It gives much practical advice that is easy to implement in real business life and emphasises the genuine cost savings and improved cashflow that can be gained.
What I like most about the boook is its structure - it starts with the basics (why inventory control is important financially), and takes you through basic forecasting methods to more advanced levels (e.g. double exponential smoothing). You can implement most of the advice in Excel or similar spreadsheet. I am no mathematician and I must admit I found some of the formulas difficult to understand at first, but please do not be put off - perserverence will pay dividends and you will see this perseverence hit the bottom line!

Kelly's materials are popular with catechists. This should signal prospective readers that Kelly writes for someone with little or no information about, knowledge, or experience with actual faith practice as a Catholic. For catechetical purposes, the Kelly materials are useful, however, there is no theological exegesis or in-depth presentation of contemplative texts.

I ordered this book for my Bible Study class. We have completed week 2. However, I loved this book so much that I have already read the whole thing, typed all the scriptures and am rereading them on the appropriate day,

A book to help you grow during Advent

When I saw a review copy Rediscover Advent, by Matthew Kelly in the envelope at the post office, I'll admit I was excited. Kelly's Rediscovering Catholicism was one of my favorite books from my 2008 reading and continues to be a book I recommend highly to others.

Rediscover Advent is arranged to be a companion to daily Scripture reading during Advent. Each day lists the readings and includes an excerpt from Scripture. There's a reflection-taken from Rediscovering Catholicism, as it turns out-some meditation questions, and a prayer.

It's an interesting way to introduce readers to Kelly's earlier writing, and I was a bit surprised at how it all fit into the Advent framework.

This book will help you journey through Advent and grow in your enthusiasm for your Catholic faith. It's not a huge commitment, and I can see it applying to a wide variety of people-everyone from busy corporate executives to up-to-their-ears-in-kid-stuff parents. It's the perfect size to tuck into a briefcase or purse and take with you.
