HERMAN LAM, PhD, is the Principal of Wild Crane Horizon and President of the Calibration & Validation Group. Dr. Lam has developed and presented an instrument qualification and performance verification course for Agilent Technologies and other organizations in North America and Asia.

XUE MING ZHANG, PhD, is a Manager at Apotex, responsible for overseeing the development of stable liquid formulations. He also works on method development and validation for both instrument and chemical analysis.

If you are looking for more answers than some of the self stylized 'masters' or prophets offer, than read this book. As it spans several decades and was the inspiration for Gene Rodenberry's Star Trek any avid truth seeker will delight and be inspired as I am after reading. It is thought provoking and will leave you understanding why some of the catalytic events happen in our world. The message that we are beings in a universe of many but with one profound difference we have choice, whereas other planets function on collective choice should shake up anyone's sleepy mind. I cannot recommend this more highly, just read it with an open mind.

Nice Fakebook for Bluegrass

As far as fake books go, this one is as nice as any other that you will find. I did have the thought that the promo songs in the description tended to highlight all of the songs that were familiar to me when most of the songs in the book were ones I'd never heard of before. However, although I've just been a frequent bluegrass listener over the years and am now voraciously learning every song I hear since learning guitar so I think the book was more than worth the money. I've used this brand of fake book in the past for piano and found the quality to be very good.

"B-Side" songs

I was iffy at first but bought it anyway. I know a lot of jam session songs, but most of the songs in this book are unfamiliar to me...hence my B-Side title. What REALLY makes this book bad is its binding! It is thick and has a bunch of songs, but the solid plastic binding on the side (not the fingers that go through the pages, but a side view) is so wide that the book doesn't bend backward worth a darn. I though I could have it removed and redone with a spiral, but the songs and text goes right to the binding edge of the paper...no room to get this rebound. Also, after a couple of page turns, the binding gets bunched up...yuck. Before you buy this book make sure you have these (in no particular order, and read reviews for personal taste): "Bluegrass Fakebook 150 All Time Favorites" by Bert Casey, "Bluegrass Songbook" by Peter Wernick, "Bluegrass Guitar" by Happy Traum, "Parking Lot Picker's Songbook" by Dix Bruce (get the Guitar edition, it comes with 2 CD's). And always opt for spiral bound editions (unless you can hold the pages with your feet ;-)

Impractical

I bought all three jazz Real Books. The material is fine, but Hal Leonard Publishing apparently hasn't heard of coil binding and doesn't know or care about the practicality of it. The books fall apart after a small amount of actual use. If Hal can't figure out coil binding, then he ought to sell the product as an unbound shrink-wrapped stack of paper so we can get it bound the professional way.

Great price for quiet time fun

My youngest two (ages 4 & 5) had a blast finding the pictures. They are hidden, but easy enough for a preschooler to find. I suggest it for the preschool and early kindergarten age, but after that would find it too simple.

Great book for the pre-K set

I bought this for my two-year-old, thinking that it would involve finding letters hidden in pictures and thus reinforce letter recognition in a fun way (no, I didn't spend a heck of a lot of time reading the description). Instead, there are a list of small pictures along the bottom of each double-page spread, each with a label, and with all starting with the same letter; the child must find each picture.

Even though the pictures have labels, this is incidental in a sense, as the child could simply ignore them to find the pictures. This isn't really a drawback-- just don't expect this book to reinforce alphabetic or reading skills by necessity when doing the searches. That said, I plan to have my early-reading son sound out many of the words when working each picture-find.

The difficulty of finding each item varies. Some are out in the open, so to speak, and some hidden in a more difficult way.

The pictures are fun, whimsical, and in color. I am highly pleased with the visual appeal of this book. My son also likes it a good deal.

My daughter was really exicted when she got this book. She sat down and worked through the first half of the book within an hour though. I feel its more Pre-K not K and above.

The title of of this book tells you all you need to know about it. Gerald Brown doesn't just tell you the odds of the more popular casino games. He explains how those odds are calculated. You will learn about equally likely outcomes, trials and events. You'll learn about the equations used for calculating the odds for craps, roulette, blackjack and keno. Brown will teach you how to work the equations yourself. You will read why betting systems don't work. Brown breaks down the material so it's easy to understand. Even if math was something you disliked in school.

Most gamblers are probably not going to be using Pascal' s Triangle or Binomial Theorem while playing in the casino. However, if you're interested in becoming a more knowledgeable gambler or just more knowledgeable in general, I think this is a book you'll like.

Very good coverage of the topic; math but not too much!

This is a good no nonsense introduction to what's really going on in the casinos and the futility of trying to outdo them with some betting scheme. Mr. Brown shows the math in a way those of us with basic skills can understand; I.e., it's math for non math majors. The chapter on betting systems is excellent and well presented. I wish more people read it as they would save themselves a lot of money.

The best educational python book so far

I'm very passionate about the educational aspects of programming and because of that I got interested in Learning Python by Fabrizio Romano. For a long time I was looking for a single book which could fulfil the following requirements:

- introduce programming concepts in a very clear but not too simple way so that the reader would feel that his time spent with the material is highly optimized and there are no over-explained ideas
- focus on the practical aspects therefore showing how really a given language is used (by really of course I mean professionally) and not merely being a reference to the whole richness of modern programming languages. The reference type of books are in my opinion very harmful since way too often they are leaving the reader with enormous set of possible permutations of language constructs that ultimately make the user more lost than before reading the book.
- showing that programming is highly creative and collaborative activity.

Fulfilling all above conditions requires from the author an incredible sense of balance and deep understanding of readers mind, skills and motivation and in my opinion the author of Learning Python achieved that.

I'm quite an advanced Python developer with few years of professional experience and initially I was only planning to read few chapters (advance ones) of Learning Python but because of some intuition I started to read from the first chapter and after few minutes I was hooked! I loved it! Here are some of things I've noted down while reading the book:

- the author used very light conversational style which makes the text very easy to read and follow
- the idea of using inline comments in the code snippets making them a natural almost organic continuation of the main text is ingenious!
- incredible amount of side threads that introduce certain concepts which will be fully outlined later in book but enable one to start becoming comfortable with way earlier.
- chapters are organized in a brilliant fashion not using some artificial and highly theoretical categorisation but rather the practicality and intuition.
- projects (especially the one in last chapter) are highly practical and could be easily used in real world products.

I think that the best way to describe Learning Python is to compare it to a very good book for studying one of the foreign languages, a book which does not focus on every single aspect of a language by overflowing the reader with tables of grammar rules, declinations and super boring and useless examples but rather showing beauty, richness, smartness and adaptivity of certain ideas and concepts making the language alive and such a powerful tool to communicate, create poetry and literally construct any yet unthinkable thoughts.

Quite accidentally while reading Learning Python I've found a quote by Antoine de Saint-Exup�ry which in a prefect way describes what I really tried to convey above:

If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea
```

And without any doubts Fabrizio Romano and his Learning Python taught me how to long for the endless immensity and richness of the world of Python.

with good examples and funny analogies when forced toexplain things

This is a very impressive work. Bought the book and read it very quickly, it gave me a very bright idea of what python can do and cleared me out of some subtle doubts about this language. I was used to do some python projects, with Django framework, but I never had the opportunity to really know this astounding language, and, I must say, in this warming way.

Yes, that’s what I felt the most important in this book. The writer seems to feel tied to the reader in a mission to catch always his attention, with good examples and funny analogies when forced toexplain things. I felt reading this book something like you’re in a classroom with a teacher that tries to make you think but at the same time he must avoid you to get asleep or watch out of the window.

Maybe I read a very overly complicated Groovy book before this, but I appreciated so much the effort to explain in the simplest way possible a lot of concepts, and made me feel at ease with every single page. Furthermore most of chapters aim to giving you a good knowledge about best practices both in design phase and implementation phase, alerting from every possible mistake you should avoid from the very beginning of your learning.

In the end I think it’s a very solid base to learn the language or to understand better some aspects of django or even other frameworks. Chapters from 9 to 11 are my favorites because they inspect every kind of things you can do with Python and Django about Web and Data Analysis, and they revealed to be really helpful for almost every project I got involved.

Excellent introduction to Python and broader programming concepts.

As a new Python developer myself I was super excited to find out that Fabrizio will be publishing a book on the subject.

Coming from a statically typed languages background, I found dynamic languages quite refreshing. I had done medium size project in Ruby and now found myself in a Python shop. Python is one of these languages that you can hit the ground running with very quickly, but to appreciate it in full and to understand its philosophy you need to dig dipper. This book is for everyone who wants to do so.

There are many conventions when writing Python which are considered "Pythonic". You'll be able to learn about them by following simple examples and straightforward explanations provided by the author. There are many hidden features and gotchas in Python that this book will point you to so you can maximize efficiency and elegance of your work. Some of more fun that I found are: negative indexing, using else with 'for' and 'while' loops, LEGB rule and so on....

On top of this, not much prior programming knowledge is expected from the reader (although some would be preferable since samples getting complicated quickly)

Overall I enjoyed reading this book and would highly recommend it to anyone.

About the Author
The author is a professor in the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he teaches atmospheric physics and remote sensing to undergraduate meteorology majors and graduate students. His research specialties include satellite microwave remote sensing of rainfall and other atmospheric variables, as well as radiative transfer modeling in three-dimensional clouds.

Excellent book!

An excellent introductory book on atmospheric radiation that fills a previously huge void in the books available on this topic. Written in a style that differs from any textbook I've ever experienced. The book covers a wide spectrum of issues related to atmospheric radiation, but doesn't overwhelm the reader in the process. Practical examples and applications of the theories and ideas presented abound. A very refreshing...dare I say enjoyable...scientific book.

Masterful Exposition

This is among the best scientific textbooks I have read. I wish I could give it six stars. There are interesting points scattered throughout the book, I even got a couple of new perspectives from an early chapter on electromagnetism. The section on radiative heating and cooling due to trace gases (Chapter 10) particularly grabbed me, because of its implications for Global Warming (excuse me, Climate Change). I liked the book so much I even read the Appendix, and sure enough, there was an interesting discussion of the rigorously correct but counterintuitive and computationally troublesome Extinction Paradox. A thouroughly excellent book.

Perfect book for an introductory level

This book was used in my graduate atmospheric radiation class. It was far supperior to the book used in my undergrad class (wallace and hobbs introduction to atmospheric sciences) not that W&H was a bad book but this book is much more focused since it is not as broad as W&H book.

Good aspects of this book is that it starts with a good fundemental background before it delves into the real meat of the course (being radiative calculations for both long wave and short wave theory). The book is very easy to read for someone with introductory knowledge of radiative theory and is not much tougher without this introductory knowledge. The figures are clear and concise and the topics are well organized.

Downfall of this book is the excersices presented to reinforce topics. Most of the excercises are just plug and chug or are descriptive problems that really only require one to read the previous section. more problems and problems that require more thinking would be benificial but the author already aknowledges that this was a week point of the book.

Over all the book was written very well and was easy to understand. It is a great tool for anyone interested in atmospheric radiation, either on an introductory level or as a complement to ones library. Given the other books available for a course on radiation this one ranks near or on the top.

And as a University of Oklahoma Meteorology alumni, I must say, Boomer Sooner.

Don't expect to learn any songs with this book. This book is strictly for learning how to sight read, which is a good thing. Every guitarist should learn how to read standard notation and move away from tabulature. This book is good for developing single-note soloing skills, but I think there are better guitar method books out there where you can learn how to sight read while playing interesting pieces that don't sound like simple exercises.

Guitar sight-reading

This is an excellent vehicle to learn and enhance sight-reading abilities with guitar. Each exercise seems to link to previous exercises and move you forward with more challenges. The genius is in the author's ability to make you read the notes...you can't anticipate what's coming next. Thanks to William Leavitt.
