About the Author
A prominent psychiatrist, James F. Masterson was born in Pennsylvania and educated at the University of Notre Dame and Jefferson Medical College. As a psychiatrist, Masterson became an authority on the treatment of personality disorders. He founded the Masterson Institute for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in 1977 and he wrote seven influential texts during his career. He died in 2010.

the best book I've read on psychiatry

Masterson is extremely insightful about two common, and until recently considered untreatable, personality disorders: borderline spectrum and narcissism. He helps the reader to understand the etiology of these disorders and how both involve the creation of a false self. What I liked most about this book is that he doesn't treat people with these disorders as if they're an alien species ("crazy people"), while the rest of us are "normal". We all have a little borderline or narcissism in us. This is a compassionate and intelligent book.

The Real Deal

I have read a good deal of Winnicott and Bollas writing about the true self, and it has been enlightening and informative, yet somewhat nebulous. Without realizing it, this probably relates to the fact that coherent theories of the Self are sketchy and incomplete. Masterson masterfully reviews these theories, the confusion between ego and self and "I", then offers a very clear conceptualization of the self, with focus on the Real Self. Far apart from the romantic or mystical connotations one might have, Masterson addresses the components and development of the Real Self, he defines it as such to highlight the role of the Real Self in dealing with reality, and describes a therapeutic technique - and the crucial timing of its use - as a means of supporting self-initiation, especially with borderline and narcissistic personalities. This is a must read for professionals working from a psychodynamic and/or object relations framework. It should have some value for the lay person, although it is not designed as such. A beneficial surprise is Masterson's look at the real self in relationship to creativity - creativity in living and artisitic creativity, as well as a brief review of the fate of the Real Self in different cultures.

Disappointing

I agree with some of the reviewers here, it is definitely disappointing to see a bad seed among the good "... for dummies" series. I have previous experience with programming languages, although this is not my everyday task. I got interested in Python and wanted the book to guide me through the basics. After reading the first 7-8 chapters I started asking myself whether I missed something in the previous ones, as I lost track (and interest) in the book.
I found the examples parsed in the chapters rather useless, and not practical. Since, I have found several useful on-line tutorials on [...] where the user is taken through the chapters in a gradual, progressive way. The examples and exercises in a beginner's book should be based on what is learned in the previous chapters, giving the reader the idea that what is learned is put in practice, thus easily assimilated.

I don't recommend this book for a complete novice, as she/he will lose interest in Python programming very easily! This book has the advantage of presenting the main and most important features of the Python programming language, but it sues a more advanced audience.

The low rating is indeed due to the non adequacy of the book for beginners and for not following the good standards of the "...for dummies" successful series.

And this is good for?....

I have read a couple dummies books and usually they are more of an introductory baby steps type of book. This was not the case. It feels they tried to offer more and it ended up coming across as babble.

I found myself getting bored at times. I can program in Perl and I started this book knowing I might be above the topics at times. I was looking to this book as an introduction to Python. The examples given were not as good as I would have liked. Overall, I don't think the presentation of topics were not good. For example, I thought two chapters on OOP was overkill for this type of book and probably should have been reduced to a chapter on the bigger things you may do.

I mention the examples again as I usually like to enter them for the fun of it. However, they really don't give a good feeling for the power of python.

I did like the spider example but it was lightly discussed.

The last two chapters I think were most useful for the links and other modules that were mentioned.

I should say glob was mentioned and I think the book should have talked about it more then just a passing mention.

So will I suggest this book? Probably not. It really depends on the person. I think it has to be a person that is between beginner and somebody who knows how to program.

Python For Dummies starts out by explaining how Python came to be, why it's different than other languages, and what sort of applications are best suited for the Python approach. After that's out of the way, you get coverage of each Python feature and how it works. If you've ever gone through a book on a new programming language, you'll recognize the general layout and approach. The authors don't assume much prior programming experience (typical for a Dummies book), so the material is approachable and the writing is conversational in tone. I appreciated the section on "Working Like a Programmer", as it tries to establish proper development technique and mindset. Too often, books like this just toss out the features and no thought is given to grounding the reader in style. Unfortunately, that can lead to bad habits that are hard to correct down the road.

About the only thing I found lacking in this book were some larger, more comprehensive coding examples. Most of the code snippets are pretty small in nature, and aren't indicative of the type of programs you'd find in the wild. There are a couple larger examples, but I think it would have been nice to see a few more "real life" programs dissected and analyzed. Still, for someone getting started, you'll have enough to get started with...

Get at it! (Now)...

The theme of the book is that during economic downturns, it's tougher for salespeople to sell their products, maintain existing clients and acquire new ones. Cardone first explains 4 possible responses to an economic downturn and why aggressively 'advancing and conquering' is the winning response. He then goes on to suggest a number of selling strategies including how to activate existing clients, old clients, new clients and second sales - in addition to explaining how to ask for referrals. He explains the importance of Price and delivering at "wow" levels. Then he explains the importance of "acting hungry", how to develop effective marketing campaigns and, how to define your target market in a downturn. He shares his ideas on how to maximize the scheduling of your day and also why having a financial plan and budget is critical to your success. My assessment:

1) This is a quick read. The book is written in conversational tone and in plain speaking language

2) It is written from someone who has done it and has been in the trenches - author is passionate and credible on the topic. For this reason the book is both motivational and inspirational - it leaves you wanting to get right at it and take ownership of your own destiny.

3) Each chapter is followed by exercises with thought provoking questions to reinforce your understanding of the concepts and approaches.

4) The book is written for the individual contributor salesperson. This is not an ivory tower text book - just practical suggestions on how a salespeople can/should move forward.

5) Cardone pushes his own sales training, books, seminars, and web site a bit aggressively (...yet, how can one fault a master salesman for asking for the business)

6) Certainly appreciated his approach of taking massive action and energy - and following up relentlessly - while others are paralyzed in the downturn.

7) I didn't find the sales strategies necessarily fresh, but the re-packaging and positioning was definitely worth the read.

8) As the title of the book suggests, the book is on sales strategies and not specifically on "selling" or "sales process" techniques. For these topics, you would be advised to check out his earlier book.

A few of my favorite excerpts from the book include:

"People develop an overall unrealistic attitude when the business is good and wind is at their backs. When the market changes and belts tighten, the forces are no longer at your back but are blowing in your face. Every weakness is greatly magnified when times get tough."

"Personal visits are the single most powerful method by which yo will ever make contact with a client and are guaranteed to advance your position. It would take 10 phone calls to equal the outcome of one personal visit."

"You must be willing - especially during economic slowdowns - to take extreme actions in order to offset the pullback. Often, the action seems extreme because people are conditioned to wait from something to happen rather than making something happen."

"Follow up, follow up, and follow up - despite what anyone tells you, despite the emotions, despite anything - follow-up."

"When people ask, "Why is he always moving so fast?" my answer is, "That's how I roll." When they ask, "What's the hurry? Chill out," inspire them by saying, "The more I do, the more I can do, and the more I can do, the more I get done!" When they tell you, "Slow down and enjoy your life," tell them, "I can't slow down. I have an economy to create so that I can ensure the future of my family."

The WOW book! Look up and follow the leader - YOU!

IF YOU'RE NOT FIRST, YOU'RE LAST reads the catchy title of this book and if the reader is not careful about peeking into a motivationally challenging way of looking at success, the subtitle may go unnoticed: SALES STRATEGIES TO DOMINATE YOUR MARKET AND BEAT YOUR COMPETITION. Author/motivator Grant Cardone doesn't dance around issues. He confronts those fortunate enough to purchase this book with the fact that yes, the market is scary right now so gear up and take advantage of the opportunity that while colleagues may be cowering in fear, you can jump into the positive mode of thinking and come out on top. 'Problems are opportunities, and conquered opportunities equal money earned' is just one of the motivating phrases that jump off every page of this book. Topics such as 'An advance-and-conquer attitude', 'Why dominance means disregarding social norms', and 'How to deliver at "WOW" levels' may give an idea of the strengths of Cardone's writing, but at the same time Cardone won't allow his reader to simply buy another self-help book to stash on the shelf: he demands much of those smart enough to jump onto his rocket to success.

How to make use of this slow recession period is for this reader the most fascinating part of the book. Cardone presents schedules of how to manage each day in contacting potential clients, following through in manners that may seem a bit pushy at first reading until Pow! - there is Cardone's result table. 'Don't seek to satisfy; seek to wow. The more you wow, the less you have to promote - because others do it for you!' Citing too much of the information within this book would be unfair to the author and might discourage readers from buying into this book's powerhouse of motivation. Suffice it to say that this is one fascinating read, a book that is easy to digest and stimulating enough to make the reader incorporate that 'Yes I can' feeling.

Towards the end of this book Cardone summarizes his outlook: 'Be outrageous in your thinking, relentless in your execution, and unreasonable in your actions, and you too will advance and conquer. Read this book and you'll become a believer - and a successful one at that. Grady Harp, May 10

Aptly titled

This book presents a series of articles on music and the role of music in a variety of cultures around the globe. The articles each begin with a description of a musical event or concert in a culture, then go on to give more details about characteristics of a wide range of musical styles in that culture. The featured description in each chapter is usually some sort of traditional or classical style for that culture, and popular music in the culture is treated briefly. I found a few of the musical terms hard to understand, never having studied musical theory myself. Perhaps some of these terms would have become more clear through listening to the oft-mentioned accompanying CD, which I unfortunately don't have. There is a glossary in the back of the book, but its definitions are not sufficient to make meanings clear to someone without a thorough grounding in world music. In a few places, the proofreader missed some details, as for example, p. 46 the map of the Middle East shows UAR where the UAE is supposed to be! In addition to the use of technical terms without explanations, the lack of an overall big picture of world music makes this book more of a resource to dip into for background readings than a systematic introduction to the subject. It would work well as readings for a course, but is not ideal for self-study.

"Philosophy in Hamlet" is a revised and updated edition of the master's thesis, defended as the first thesis on "Hamlet", at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade, in January 2012. Based on the study of "Hamlet" written by Lev S. Vygotsky, the book "Philosophy in Hamlet" deals with fundamental philosophical problems: the problem of being, the problems of the nature of reality and two worlds, the problem of time and the four-dimensional perception of reality associated with it, the problems of the transcendent and the supernatural, the feelings of absurdity and meaning, making parallels between Jung's synchronistic meaning and the meaning in "Hamlet", and finally with the philosophy expressed in the tragedy of "Hamlet". Reviewers: Radoslav Djokić, Professor of aesthetics "The book 'Philosophy in Hamlet' written by Jasminka Maric, is a systematic analysis of Shakespeare's most famous play. The author has rightly relied on the exceptional study of Lev Vygotsky with regard to the compatibility of the basic assumptions of both books. The sphere of the ontological is spacious, if not infinite, but the author has caught with her research 'network' its most important aspects, actually those which are essential for Shakespeare's play. Thanks to such procedure, the author has managed, in her own, authentic way, to highlight the multi-layered structure of Shakespeare's play." Mirko Zurovac, Professor of aesthetics and ontology: "The basic hypothesis from which the author has started, is that the tragedy of 'Hamlet', in its essence and foremost, is a metaphysical tragedy and that metaphysical discourse, not philological, is suitable for the analysis of ontological aspects in that play. Moreover, the author has added at the end seven of her poems that are imbued with metaphysical inspiration, which in a direct poetic way, point to a metaphysical passion with which the author has written this very important and very interesting book".
